11 interior design ideas Pinterest hasn't ruined yet
Unexpected metallics, neon curtains, latex lamps, and more interior design ideas for your next 3am chaos project
If you’ve been online lately, or inside any of your recent Hinge dates’ apartments, you may have noticed everyone has the same living room. Between Cool Signaling™ and the internet flattening everyone’s personal taste, I think we MUST put real effort into keeping our creative health alive.
That extends—or maybe starts—with your home space. The studio in which you create your life.
Below, 11 unconventional interior design ideas that Pinterest hasn’t ruined yet—any of which would make a fabulous impulse project.
1. Metallic walls
Currently trying to weasel some silver foil onto my door trims somehow. All adventurous women do.
FRUIT TIP: Consider metallic textiles. Re: window treatments, upholstery, and bedding.
2. Unexpected tiling
FRUIT TIP: Okay, maybe tiling your whole shower isn’t in the cards. So get smaller! Think unique coaster tiles, a mini backsplash, or a grid of 4 tiles on the wall à la #10 on the list.
And dare I suggest you take a ceramics class and design your own tiles (as a treat)?
3. Neon accents
FRUIT TIP: Take it further and go neon for your countertops.
4. Pastel-industrial
A design aesthetic that I’m still in the process of researching. Cold metals, exposed plumbing, and concrete floors meet a candy-coated color palette. Shall we call it pastel-industrial? Perhaps pastelbrutalism on a case-by-case basis?
FRUIT TIP: You probably have SOMETHING chrome in your house—especially if you were a victim of the 2023 Pinterest Cool Person Apartment (see here). So! Find ways to add that pastel juxtaposition into what you already have.
A pillow cover or throw blanket, a hazy pink rug, ceramics… the world is your pastel oyster 🦪
5. Latex
My texture hyperfixation of the moment. A natural progression from the PVC shower curtain thing.
6. Hand-painted murals
If you’re feeling frisky, a wall mural makes your space truly yours. IMO, it’s a little more interesting and raw than wallpaper—and there really is no bounds on what stylistic direction you take with this. Let your mind run wild.
7. Animal print upholstery
FRUIT TIP: Also very into doing a zebra print pillar candle or leopard print matting with unexpected photos or art.
8. Green-painted floors
DIGITAL FRUITS green is infecting my life. The floor is lava DIGITAL FRUITS.
FRUIT TIP: Fellow kelly-green lovers, have you considered a kelly-green bed?
9. Loud couches
From psychedelic florals to Mah Jong plaids. Best done when it makes no fucking sense in the rest of your space.
*Mah Jong sofa mention on Music, Fashion, Film
10. Polyptychs + grid art
Dump your gallery wall for a polyptych or a cohesive story (through print, mixed media, photos, et cetera) hung as a grid.
11. Not-guchi lamps
Noguchi’s work will never go out of style… but I’d be fooling myself if I said those paper globe lanterns haven’t been exhausted and commodified by the zeitgeist in the last few years (callback: 2023 Pinterest Cool Person Apartment). If you too are feeling a little burnt out on the paper globe-athon, consider lanterns of other textures, shapes, and materials.
I hope you’re having a very Weird Girl With Great Taste evening tonight (or tomorrow, whenever you’re reading this). If you’re not… QUICK: find your nearest Alice Coltrane record, make yourself the best dinner ever (at 10:04pm, no less), put on your favorite leopard slip, and pick which interior design rabbit hole you want to go down next. Might I suggest latex?
Oh, ooone more thing! A poll for you. I want to know…
